Dedicated to Abbie Hyche,
beyond our soul-sorority.
“I knew goodness and evilness, sin and virtue,
justice and infamy; I judged and was judged,
I went through the birth and death, joy and sorrow,
heaven and hell; and finally I recognized
that I am in everything and everything is in me”.
Ezequiel D’León Masís
Under this ambitious and ambiguous title, I will develop some quick notes.
I have been preparing an educational workshop design for adults, recently. I was thinking and feeling some insights about trauma and creativity. The next words mention aleatory references in each main archetypal energy that I have experienced by my own. Up to here, there are involved at least 10 subjects in creative art processes for me. The first issue I need to set clearly to my reader is the concept of “creativity” that I am using now for this. Well… Creativity could be understood as the (meta) ability to create new solutions to old challenges, specially in the new relevant contexts. So, creativity implies some hard roots connected to this radical fact: “the only permanence is the continuous change” (Budha Shakyamuni). In arts, so far, creativity is rightly the same thing. The supposed extra topic concerned to aesthetics is part of another post. I just want to say that every human act encloses itself an aesthetic research (beyond our wills).
1. MAGIC TRANCE.-
Around the fire, the human group rises up as super-organism. The experiences of unity from primal community arouses. Art is a symptom here. The creativity in the trance period is pure action: the act of creating all forms of expression (sounds, dance, painting, acting, etc.), but all is lived by individuals as a temporal breach to the unknown powers of Nature or Gods. The individual is not important at all. The group contains everything and the “trance” is a ritual to go to the “other side of the river of ego, the next gate” (Malidoma Somé). Reality is the real illusion.
2. BODY AND DESIRE.-
Creativity in this zone is a way to project desires on the sensual libidinal body. The “meeting” with the otherness (Arthur Rimbaud) concludes in a tactility of imagination, the mind and spirit are focused in the object/subject of desires: fetishism, sexual ludopathic practices appear as performance. The body talks by itself and the voice of the individual talks to the body. From romantic courtesan theater (Shakespeare), passing across the adolescent pornography (George Bataille, Virginie Despentes) to the fanatic erotic murder (Krafft-Ebing) or the torture becoming a sublime orgasm (Salvador Elizondo), love is an illusion. The intestines are full of feces. Eschatology of the body always challenge us to create solutions from the awareness of death (Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud…). All these stadiums are trying to explore the body in both faces: the external luminous beauty of the skin and the dark interior of the organs and spirit. Body, the flesh, owned as a corporal map by an individual, derives as object of desires or a subject of rights (Simone de Beauvoir, Emma Goldman, Marcela Lagarde, etc.). In the best case, the creative dream body performance occurs in the healthy boundaries box, sometimes… simply not.
3. HEROIC & EPIC SELFVOICE.-
Anselm Grün has written some good books on burn out syndrome… Well… This is the territory of “the saver” archetype. The creativity is a road to announce the mission of saving a nation value (Whitman) or saving a race (Marley, Malcom “X”, Atahualpa, Ché, etc.). The saver mood is usually accompanied with the prophet roll. It is tired to play this roll, it is a roll, a tape!!!!!… Creativity is a force to move ourselves to action in the first moment. Then, it is a poisoned mask or armor (Robert Fisher). The saver doesn’t know too much about his/her self. What is in the back side of the messianic mania? Check this carefully: there is only a huge emotional hall full of anger. Anger, is a full font of creative light but also a rigorous self-destruction path. The classical end of the martyr, we all know this: loosing the own life (Jesus, Mother Teresa, etc.).
Creativity is solving things in this point, specially inner pending things. So, it is a matter of release and take the shit out: spew and vomit. The art is again a symptom coming from the inner knot (Jackson Pollock, Jimmy Hendrix, Antonie Tápies, Eric Dholphy, John Cage, Charles Bukowski). Art is accepting to leave the pain and the joy, in order to live.
5. ANARCHIST REBEL SAPIENS.-
The rebel is usually a full time creative character. It is a little different than the Messiah’s ill. The rebel is against the Establishment so he or she promotes alternatives ways to sabotage it. If we are in front of the mixture of being a rebel and being informed on the essential wisdom of creativity, the results are amazing master works (Galileo, Nietzsche, Cioran, Carlos Martínez Rivas, Jesús Lizano, Hakim Bey, Abbie Hoffman, etc.). Creativity in this terms is a type of criticism: energy is concentrated in the mission of shaping new visions about the world status and its probabilities. May be, the rebel mind is not able to give us a better kind of vision, but defensive and unique radical visions.
6. SOCIAL JUSTICE REALISM.-
Oh… I would like to say nothing else, but wait… Some Russian authors (Tolstoi, Dostoyevsky, Gorky, Chejov, etc.) and social workers are examples… The creativity in this ethical zone implies to defend the justice according to a pragmatic ideological agenda. So it is the only case when the creativity could be sad, salty and scientifically boring. Some exception exists, of course: the great Víctor Jara’s voice, music, dignity and lyrics are still alive.
7. THE TYRANNY OF DARKNESS (THE “ANCOLIA FLOWER” SYNDICATE).-
There is a solid and black flower named “ancholy”. When this flower rises up in our interior we are connected to the low and down astral vibration. The creativity explores the interesting cruelest part of human beings. The shadow, the collective bad karma, etc. Not even a basic morality of live appears in this archetypal imaginarie (Conde de Lautréamont, Edgar Allan Poe). Instead, satanism and badness are aesthetic researches (Gérard de Nerval, Charles Baudelaire, Sophie Podolsky).
The creative mind in this approach is practically a “deraciné” (french term that means “person without roots”). The continuous change is the adventure, and for sure the abrupt changes take part too (Paul Gaugin). Open to uncertainty of live and death (Ikkyo, Dogen Zenji, Kodo Sawaki). It is the best condition to develop creativity. Contexts, situations, people… All is unknown… The inner “daimon” (δαίμων) is the exclusive ally (Fernando Pessoa, Clarissa Pinkola, Nina Simone).
9. SUFFERING AND THEN WATCHING BEYOND THE PAIN.-
Our victim roll needs to be accepted once or twice in life and, only then, we can let it go… Surviving a trauma usually makes us to go deeply in the burning flames of healing (David Lynch, Arnold Mindell) or the resilience (Frida Khalo). Even to be a suffered person, it has been said that you need to develop some talents (Eduardo Lizalde). Depression and hell, most of times, is a creative result of curiosity (Ken Wilber). Creativity is here a great ally because we sublime the pain and we are capable to transform it, eventually.
10. FLOW OF THE PRESENT MOMENT.-
Once you have participated of several archetypal energies (more than the short list I share in this text), suddenly our perception is surfing on the wave the flow offers. We are integrating the potentiality. Senses, no categories, body alive, no ideology, but feeling. That is what sensology is about (Carlos Beyod Serafini). If we leave theoretical machination, all is pure sensation, our brain is reconstructed by the contact with the present skin (Steve Paxton). The flow is always with us, no matter how and where. Emptiness and presence of the body (Taisen Deshimaru) is one of the gates to go inside the flow. Creativity consists just in following and reacting to the instant. Listen to the impulses of the body and act (Dorothy Ashby).
We paste and add all the versions about ourselves, deciding and going ahead always. Hell or heaven, this is the flow of Tao, the ink always ahead and, also, always a heart inside.
